Denied the Queer

A solemn man wearing a rainbow badge stands in the ruins of a gothic cathedral, as ravens circle beneath a moonlit sky

What does it take to survive a world that fears your very light?

Brought the world beauty and wonder,
but our gift caused them fear.
Stood proud in glorious colours
while we denied the queer.

Bound in shackles for centuries,
we found ways to break free.
Not defined by society,
we fought rather than flee.

Murdered and thrown from high towers
to stop our kind of love.
Gagged and oppressed by the righteous
by orders from above.

—H, still standing on the ashes of their shame
