Twisted Carcass

Withered Tudor queen, Elizabeth I, in a decaying throne room, bathed in cold light from a high window.

How long can a heart survive behind stone, unseen and unloved?

I languished within my bereft fortress,
with a twisted carcass and withered heart.
Forever majestic and virtuous;
the sun turned its gaze from my glacial face.

Feeble men lingered within the Tower,
with perverted desires and poisoned words.
Forever misunderstood and denied;
my heart hardened to their depraved glories.

Toadies whispered magic into my ears,
while intrigue and plots travelled from abroad.
Forever indecisive and disguised;
ambitious men conspired to depose.
